5 Bachelor’s Degree Alternatives

October 17, 2018 | By Louis Tully

There’s no doubt that earning your college degree is a good investment, but it’s certainly not for everyone. Unless you have a plan in mind and a good strategy in place for after you get out, college-life could just as well prove to be a waste of time. The truth is, just because you have a bachelor’s degree, doesn’t guarantee you’ll get a worthwhile job. If you’re a degree holder and still using installment loans to keep financially afloat, you may want to consider these 5 career alternatives, all of which don’t require a degree at all.

Go to a Trade School

Not every profession requires a bachelor’s degree. In fact, some of the most worthwhile careers are those that come from a place of no prior higher-education. Several well-paying jobs offer trade school programs that give you all the tools you need to succeed in your new career path. These trade schools aren’t nearly as costly as college and can be completed in half the time. There are several job occupations you could go to trade school for:

  • Contractor
  • Energy Management
  • Garden and Landscaping Designer
  • Aviation Maintenance
  • Plumbing
  • A/C Repair
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Etc.

The options don’t stop there. Visit a trade school near you and see what career options may be the best fit for you.

Join the Military

If you are interested in serving your country, the United States military offers several ways for you to get involved. For the majority of people who don’t have a clear career path in mind, the military is a good starting point. You’ll be compensated for your time serving and can use the experience to secure a good job when you’re done. Joining is easy, you’ll need to undergo a few basic eligibility and physical tests requirements. Click here for more info.

Apprenticeships

Applying for an apprenticeship could land you a job that pays you to train in a particular profession. After your apprenticeship is over, your career begins. Try applying for an apprenticeship in one of the following industries:

  • Construction
  • Energy
  • Manufacturing
  • Healthcare
  • IT
  • Telecommunications

Of course, applying for an apprenticeship doesn’t guarantee you a job, but for those who get in, it’s a path that could lead to an annual income ranging between $50,000 and $300,000 a year.

Become a Police Officer or a Firefighter

Public service via the police or fire department is a very exciting and equally rewarding career choice. Certain areas around the country are more completive than others in these fields, but if you can get into the academy, the rest that will follow may change your life forever and for the better. Getting started, you’ll need to complete various classes, assessments and tough physical training, but when it’s all said and done, you’ll have a career that not only pays well, but something to be proud of for the rest of your life.

Get Your Associate’s Degree

A nice middle-ground option could come from an associate’s degree from your local community college. You can pursue a higher education without committing to a 4-year program and as it turns out, a majority of those holding an associate’s degree are more likely to land a job. Completing your associate’s degree only takes about 2 years and when you’re done, more options suddenly become available.

So, if you don’t feel like the 4-year college experience is right for you, don’t worry. Many people go on to achieve a very successful career without it. You just need to consider your options and get started. If your money situation can’t wait for your career to start up, you could always find financial relief at your local signature installment loans lender.
