Memorial Day is right around the bend and everyone knows this is the ideal time of year to get out and enjoy time with family and friends. Everyone’s off work, the kids are out of school and the spring weather is just perfect. Now, if you’re not careful, it’s easy to get caught up in the Memorial Day fun and lose track of your spending, which can be a problem. While installment loans could help you make it through to your next paycheck, here are some ideas you can use to have fun over the long Memorial Day weekend while keeping your money in the bank:
Backyard barbecues are the perfect way to spend time outside with friends and family. Plus, if you’re the one throwing the party, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your house. Food, snacks and beverages can get a little pricey, but if everybody brings something to the party, the impact of your budget should be minimal.
Keep it simple and take the family out for a picnic at a local park, beach or even your own backyard. Make some sandwiches, bag up some drinks and snacks and don’t forget an oversized blanket for everyone to plop down on. Like barbecues, picnics are another great way to spend time outside, but on a more intimate level. Plus, picnics cost next to nothing, which means your holiday budget will go further.
If you prefer to stay out of the sun, arts and crafts are always a fun activity to do while keeping the festivities indoors. Pick up some cheap art supplies and maybe find some fun craft ideas online that you can do with the kids. It’s easy. It’s fun. It’s cheap!
There’s nothing wrong with staying in with the family and having a cozy movie night. Build a blanket fort with the kids, make some popcorn and cue up a flick the whole family will enjoy. If you already have Netflix or Hulu, you have a huge variety of movies to choose from.
What better time to visit some relatives than Memorial Day weekend? Make some calls and see what they have planned for the three-day weekend. Visiting nearby family costs very little and if you’re like most families, it may have been a while since you’ve connected. Take advantage of the holiday to make up for lost time.
If you do nothing else this Memorial Day, have yourself a nice relaxing staycation. If you need to get out of the house for a night, book a hotel in your hometown. Sometimes getting away without actually going away can be just as gratifying. It’s cheaper without all the travel and you can still be a tourist in your own hometown. Go to some places in your city you’ve never been before like a museum or a park. Seeing your hometown from a different perspective can be surprisingly refreshing.
There are so many other things you could do to take advantage of the extra time off and the beautiful spring weather. Start a garden, take the bike out for a spin, go thrifting, catch up with old friends; the list goes on.
