How to Know Whether to Move or Modernize

July 13, 2018 | By Emma Frost

Where you live is a big part of your overall happiness, so feeling “at home” is important to making your life the best it can be. But how can you tell when a house has potential to become the home you want it to be or if it would be easier and cheaper to simply sell it and find a new one that meets your current needs? If you’re stuck on whether to stay put and fix-up, or just sell your home to buy a new one that checks all the right boxes, consider these important factors to make an informed decision.

Your Local Community

As with nearly all real estate transactions, it’s all about location, location, location. There’s a lot you can do to improve your home, but you can’t change its location. If your community is the main reason you love your home, you might be hard pressed to find another one that makes you just as happy. From paint and accessories to installations and additions, there are tons of ways to breathe new life in a lived-in home.

The demand in the area you live in might also be a major deciding factor. You might have no issues selling your home and moving into a new one. But on the other hand, if the real estate market hasn’t been very active in your area, selling your home might not be so quick and easy. If it’s going to take time and money you don’t have to sell your property, you might be better off using an installment loan to start renovating your home over time.

Weighing the Cost

Just about every home has the potential to be something better, but some definitely have more possibilities than others. What works and what doesn’t? If you’re happy with the size of your home but it’s in need of an update, you can remodel bedrooms, bathrooms and even your kitchen, depending on your budget. But if you have a two-bedroom home and would need to consider knocking down walls and building an addition, you need to be sure that’s something you’re financially prepared for.

A remodel can mean pouring big bucks into a project, but it could also mean a nice return on your investment, especially if a couple of quick fixes can give your home a fresh look without a second mortgage. On the other hand, a new home could provide everything you want without the hassle and expense of a renovation. Installment loans can help you get the cash you need in a pinch, regardless of what you need it for, but be sure to crunch the numbers to determine the most cost-effective option, and keep convenience and timeframe in mind before making any major decisions.

The Hassle

Both a remodel and a move pose their own unique challenges, and it’s worth considering which one really is the best option for you. Moving can be a huge inconvenience, especially if you’re going a great distance. The house hunting process can be exciting but daunting at the same time, but it’s not the only option if you have the cash to float your venture. Renting out your old home and buying a new one might help you have your cake and eat it, too. Then there’s the hassle of packing up everything you own and relocating, which could be a huge job and expense in itself.

That is not to say that remodeling doesn’t come without its own demands. You can use it as a fun opportunity to get creative and DIY your space, but it could end up costing you more time and money than you ever imagined. If your home is in need for a total overhaul, making parts of your home totally inaccessible for extended periods can feel like a never-ending headache and hassle if you don’t have realistic expectations of the remodeling process going into it.

Take Away Points

Everyone has their own reason for wanting a change – take time to consider why you’re unhappy with your space and what it would take in time, money and effort to make an informed decision moving forward. If you’re not the only one making this move, be sure to get your family’s input and talk to people who have been through both processes for any words of wisdom or advice they can offer; this added perspective can spare you a lot of time, trouble and money. And lastly, don’t forget the internet can be an invaluable resource for researching remodel do’s and don’ts and home buying tips. Making an informed decision about which direction to take for your home-improvement adventure is the first step to making your house feel like home sweet home.
