How You Can Benefit From a College Internship

July 7, 2018 | By Louis Tully

If you want a good-paying job that won’t leave you scrambling for extra cash with a signature loan, college is pretty much a necessity. These days, many employers won’t even look at your resume if you haven’t earned at least a bachelor’s degree. That’s why millions of Americans have committed themselves to finishing college so that they can give themselves and their families the financial security and quality of life they deserve. Now, if you’re a college student preparing to take on your first internship, there’s a lot you need to know.

Choosing Your Career

College is more than just a place to earn a degree to land a high-salary job. College is the bridge that connects us to the real-world. It prepares us for life on our own in many ways our parents never could. For many, college is the place you go to discover yourself, establish your identity and ultimately find your passion. Many who go to college have no idea what kind of career they want to pursue, but after a few years of trial and error, most individuals come out with a plan for their career path.

Experience

These days, it’s not enough to simply have a college degree on your resume. You need experience in your field. Real-world experience looks so much better than 4 years spent at some university. Employers need to see that you have the hands-on experience needed to get the job done right, which is why internships can play a huge role in your transition from college student to working professional.

Unpaid Versus Paid Internships

Since most internships are only meant to be a learning experience, they don’t typically come with a weekly paycheck. Even so, you shouldn’t let this discourage you in the least. Internships do pay in college credits, which will ultimately help you achieve your degree. Plus, internships come with plenty of other rewards as well. The experience you’ll gain and the professional connections you’ll make while interning will definitely come in handy once it’s time to start your career.

The Benefits of Interning

Aside from the more obvious benefits of interning, such as gaining job experience and learning more about your field of interest, there are several other advantages that can come from internships that are often overlooked. Perhaps the biggest of these opportunities is networking. When you enter the job field by way of an internship, you immediately start to build connections with real people doing the real thing. Such connections can prove incredibly beneficial when on the hunt for a job.

Getting the Internship

When it comes to the world internships, many of them are just as competitive as landing a real job. Some internship positions are in such high demand that only a small handful are accepted each semester. But know that there are certain things you can do now that can give you the upper hand in getting the internship you want. For starters, you can make have your resume updated and ready to go. Also, be sure to prepare for a possible interview. Dress to impress and try to have answers ready for questions they’ll probably ask you like, “Why do you want this internship?” or “What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?” And finally, make sure you know what you want. If you’re not sure you want the internship you’re applying for, you may want to look down other professional avenues. In the end, it’s all about what you want to do with your life. Once you’ve figured that out, an internship will help you get there.
