Why Communication Is a Career Game Changer

October 15, 2018 | By Louis Tully

Communication is a powerful tool that, for one reason or another, is just not taken advantage of these days, especially in the workplace. Yet communication is a wonderful thing. It allows us to share just exactly what’s on our minds, so our ideas can have a chance to become reality. It’s what keeps relationships together and companies successful. It’s what makes us have a better understanding of the people around us and even ourselves. When we begin to talk, amazing things can follow. A company that regularly exercises clear and concise communication can drastically boost performance in all aspects of its business. In a way, it feels like everyone is working together as multiple parts to move one greater body. It’s the oil that keeps things lubricated and running smoothly. It’s the simplest, yet most effective strategy we have in this life. If you’re trying to run a successful business, take a step back and look at these two forms of communication and how each could ultimately change the course of your business, pushing you closer to success!

Verbal

Mastering the art of verbal speech is critically important for the success of any business. Here are a few tips to help sharpen your verbal skills so you’re ready to take on the next meeting:

  • Less is More: Don’t ever jabber when you’re trying to communicate something. People will lose interest and stop paying attention. Instead, get to the point and keep it minimal. A lot can be said with just a few words.
  • Listen: You can’t be a good communicator without being a good listener first. Listening and speaking are two sides of the same coin when it comes to communication.
  • Confidence is Key: Your audience won’t take you seriously if you’re not confident when you speak. Speak clearly, maintain eye contact, and use good posture.
  • Think Before You Speak: Though you may be excited to talk about an idea, it’s best to think on what you will say before saying anything at all. That’s because often times, we think we have something good to say until we actually hear ourselves saying it. Practice what you’re going to say beforehand so that you can make a clear presentation of your ideas.
  • Keep it Brief: Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough”. By keeping your talks brief, you can more clearly and effectively communicate your ideas with your colleagues. If you find yourself rambling, you may to go back to the drawing board.

Written

Someone once said, “the pen is mightier than the sword,” and they were right. The written word is just as powerful a form of communication as speaking it. In fact, it’s argued to be even more powerful because it gives the reader an opportunity to absorb the words more so than if they were just spoken to them. Before you write your next memo, be sure to keep these rules in mind:

  • Check Your Grammar: First and foremost, always check your spelling and grammar. If your letter is peppered with spelling errors and missed typos, nobody’s going to take you seriously.
  • Keep it Short and Sweet: Nobody wants to read a book. If you’re trying to engage your reader, learn to keep your writing short and sweet.
  • Organize Your Writing: Along with keeping your writing short and sweet, you should also remember to be organized. Use organization tools like bullet points, subheadings and paragraphs to keep your letters pleasing to the eye and easier to navigate.
  • Know Who You’re Writing To: This one is crucially important. If you don’t know your audience, some things could get lost in translation. The tone of your letter should reflect the type of relationship you have with your readers.
  • Use Names: If you want to really engage with your readers on a more personal level, use their names within the context of your letter. By using names, it’ll feel more like you’re talking directly to some of your readers without sounding too broad.

Exercising these rules will not only help sharpen your communication skills in the workplace, but in life too. If you’ve been reaching for a signature loan to help pay bills, good communication at your job might help you get that raise. If you’ve been struggling in your relationship, communication is the glue that keeps couples together. Communication is the key to success on so many levels. Whether you’re trying to achieve success in your finances, workplace, relationships or social groups, good communication is all it takes to start being heard.
